Details: Product Description Respectables Amazon.ca Three years after the hugely popular $=Bonheur, Les Respectables resurface with a fourth album that signals a return to their rock roots. Produced with the complicity of Gordie Johnson, leader of the Canadian group Big Sugar, the recording presents a heavier sound, undeniably tributary to the 70s. South American rock ("We do what we love"), reggae (" Smoking or working"), punk rock reminiscent of the Ramones ("J'arrive") or country evoking Jean Leloup ("My life on time"), all styles seem welcome for the quartet from Quebec. If we can not blame the group in terms of performance, it is quite different from the artistic direction. The musicians have indeed a hard time digesting their influences (Rolling Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys and others) to give birth to a personal signature. Also this opus turns out to be more a succession of clichés, of fragments modeled on the work of their idols than a real creative effort. To this deplorable lack of personality are added significant shortcomings in the texts, often sloppy, and the tics of the singer Sébastien Plante, who has the annoying habit of inserting more or less appropriate English passages. Fortunately, the efficient work of Johnson in the studio, which has given relief to the sound of the group, the always catchy melodies and the skilful flights of Pascal Dufour on the guitar come to counterbalance these imperfections. Early fans will also be interested in a new version of "La Java", the troupe's first French composition. --Nicolas Houle
