Details: “For years, the thoughts and reflections of Henry David Thoreau have accompanied me during my long walks in the forests and on the trails of the Appalachians. He reminds me that we owe immense respect to nature. *Walden; or, Life in the Woods* is a book that has nourished me and continues to do so at every stage of my life. For a long time, I have wanted to write songs around the universe of this man from Concord. His work is that of a man who wants to live deeply; at once a writer, involved in the abolitionist movement, a contemplative, a great walker, a philosopher of nature, a precursor of ecology, and a visionary thinker at the root of the concept of civil disobedience, he leaves us an immense body of work. Gandhi was inspired by him in his struggle for India’s independence, and Martin Luther King was influenced by the concept of civil disobedience in his non-violent fight for the civil rights of Black Americans. It would be difficult to include all the figures who crossed paths with Thoreau throughout his life. I think of the philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, editor-in-chief of *The Dial*, the transcendentalist poet William Ellery Channing, his brother John, and the Indian friend Joseph Polis, with whom Thoreau explored Chesuncook and the Allegash. I have selected John Brown, leader of the abolitionist movement, Lidian Emerson, and finally William, personifying the runaway slave on the Underground Railroad. These songs are intended as a tribute to this philosopher, this rebel, this man of his word. A tribute to the inspiring work of a writer who managed to illuminate his century as much as our own.” - Richard Séguin
