Rising Sun, his second album, gathers some 12 compositions written over the course of his 20-year career. The introspective lyrics of Rising Sun, in English, by turns dark and humorous, invite the listener to discover the world of Gilles Sioui, who shares the ups and downs of his life with us and bears witness to his Indigenous roots. His minimalist and lyrical guitar playing sometimes evokes Albert Collins, while his voice and acoustic arrangements reveal his admiration for Neil Young. In this blend of influences, Sioui manages to imprint a very personal touch on this highly rigorous first album, which gives these 12 seemingly disparate songs a beautiful unity. --Nicolas Houle
