Disc 1 revisits older recordings by some of its more prominent artists from the worlds of blues, folk, and even fusion. The second disc focuses on its current stable of artists. Much of what's here is excellent, and if you're looking for a reasonably priced introduction to the Vanguard roster past and present, this set will satisfy your needs. On the other hand, by limiting its selections to tracks from its Vanguard Sessions Series of compilations and from recent releases, Vanguard leaves out important recordings by artists--the Weavers, Paul Robeson, and Joan Baez to name three--who made vital contributions during the label's formative years and who helped give it its identity. --Marc Greilsamer
