S.Pri Noir has been rapping for ten years, and while he is only releasing his debut album today, his career is already well-established. What makes him unique is that he is a rapper from the projects who has never really played into "hood rap," even though he knows how to do it very well. It is precisely because he has been building his own thing for years that he is so well-positioned, so respected, admired, and followed by his peers.
Masque blanc is anything but a typical record from the 2018 French rap scene. It features guest appearances, long stretches where the rhythms are discreet if not absent, and then things that come from elsewhere entirely, whether it be Senegalese music, house, or here and there, many of those Caribbean, Hispanic, electro, or R&B vibes that make up the raw material of global pop today.
It is a record that evokes both the early days of S.Pri Noir – particularly his early taste for old-school "kicking," meaning those virtuoso, punchy flows in the style of Time Bomb or Secteur Ä – and anchors itself in a present where rap, having become the most spoken musical language in France, is no longer just a musical genre, but the most widespread and diverse mode of expression embraced by youth.
