Details: Amazon.ca Steven Shainberg explores the more than peculiar relationship between a boss and his secretary in Secretary, an audacious second feature film that won the Special Jury Prize for originality at the Sundance Film Festival. After a few years in a psychiatric hospital, young Lee Holloway is looking for a job. Even though she still dreams of pink orchids and dolphins, she never would have thought that her sadomasochistic impulses would be her main asset in convincing Mr. Grey, a lawyer, to hire her. How, then, to avoid the game going too far? If Steven Shainberg is skilled at one thing, it is certainly at creating discomfort. By filming this Secretary like an ordinary romantic B-movie, but injecting it with a good dose of deviance, he creates a highly original and unsettling disconnect. James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal, whose acting borders on madness, are the convincing performers of this sadomasochistic fable that reveals the secret ties between love, sex, and power. The ending, a bit convenient, could no doubt have been more daring to stay in the film's tone. The fact remains that Secretary dares to look, with great frankness and humor, behind the door of human sexuality. --Helen Faradji
