Details: Amazon.ca After the novel, the radio-theatre, the television series and the two film adaptations, the subject of A Man and His Sin seemed to be exhausted. It was without counting on the will of Charles Binamé, already director of the very beautiful Eldorado. Thanks to an impressive budget and cast, the latter was able to take a fresh look at this classic of Quebec popular culture, taken from the work of Claude-Henri Grignon. In 1890, in Ste-Adèle, an isolated village in the Laurentians, Donalda fell passionately in love with the handsome Alexis. But the latter must go to the construction sites. During this estrangement, the financial difficulties of the beautiful father will force him to take the miserly and terrible Séraphin as her husband. Pulling the strings of this mythical melodrama quite skilfully with often magnificent photography and grandiloquent music, Charles Binamé offers a journey into the collective unconscious of a people. Incarnated with great credibility by the big names in the Quebec film industry (Pierre Lebeau, Roy Dupuis, Karine Vanasse, Rémy Girard and Benoit Brière to name but a few), the characters of A Man and His Sin, who lack sometimes with a little finesse, are nevertheless at the height of their legend. And even if the passion of an impossible love is evoked with a little too much sentimentality, the film can count on a thorough staging, lighting exalting nature and the seasons and very beautiful moments of tragic intensity for everything even win his bet. --Helen Faradji
