Shades
Details: Amazon.ca It has probably never occurred to her, but Toronto singer Dayna Manning's gauzy, tear-stained pop songs could easily be reworked as country tunes, quite possibly to more dramatic effect. That's because Shades--a record five years in the making and following Manning's Volume 1 debut-- features imagery that cries out for wailing fiddle and mournful banjo. Lines like, "I'm the girl who's sometimes more appealing than the gum stuck to your shoe" (from "I'm the Girl") and "Is the person in your bed the same one in your head?" (from "The Lonely") are pure Tammy Wynette, albeit with fewer histrionics. Elsewhere, Manning details lighter themes in a voice that might be mistaken for Aimee Mann in a blind test. Recorded in L.A. with guests ranging from Chili Pepper Chad Smith to pedal steel great Greg Leisz, Shades fits comfortably in the adult contemporary/soft-pop landscape. And while nothing within is likely to set the world ablaze, smart money says Manning's Nettwerk Management team--who also represent Coldplay, Dido, Sarah McLachlan and Barenaked Ladies--will nevertheless find warm and loving homes for these songs on radio across Canada. --Kim Hughes
