Details: Hailing from Dublin but with their eyes fixed on the American West, its radiant sun and vast sandy expanses, The Thrills pull off the perfect heist of an entire slice of 1960s vintage American pop with So Much For The City. There is no doubt that The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and Buffalo Springfield reign supreme in their personal pantheon. Perfectly embraced—right down to the album cover, which could be carbon-dated—the repeated referencing of their influences is, strangely enough, not as embarrassing as one might have expected. The Thrills do not hold back on the effects, however: steel or acoustic guitars, vocal harmonies, delicately layered organs, brisk and bouncy rhythms, mannered orchestrations... Despite this overload, one boards this gleaming time machine without needing to be asked twice. This is no doubt thanks to the youthful, fragile voice of Conor Deasy, his ability to whip up a few little pop gems ("Santa Cruz", "One Horse Town"), and, more generally, the touching naivety and mastery that this venture exudes. --Fabrice Privé
