Features The Symphonic Orchestras. Amazon.ca One of the most frustrating experiences I have had recently was upon receipt of Virgin Classics' release Songs of Innocence. This is a collection of songs sung by children and mainly written by Tomás Gubitsch and Hugues de Couson. The minute I started to play it, I was blown away. Not only are the children's voices extremely good and engaging, the arrangements are excellent. The composers take the essence of a particular cultural style and manage to blend it with another and expand it into sweeping almost filmic arrangements, while keeping the children's vocals at the core. Stunning, it is. I want to send it to all my friends and their children. So why am I frustrated? No sleeve notes at all. No background, no lyrics, not even translations of just the titles. You don't even know which little person is singing which song. Never has so much been explained by so little. After a little research with the press office, I learned that the songs start with one from Bulgaria, moving on to one in the Quecha language from Peru, through to an Egyptian song about a cat. I also found out that valuable assistance was given in putting together this CD, by Francis Corpateaux, an ethnologist who specializes in children's song. So why didn't they stick that in the CD booklet? -- Antonia Couling
