Details: Product Description Every summer, Jean and Marie go on vacation in the Landes region. But this year, while Marie is sleeping on the beach, Jean disappears. Did he drown? Did he run away? Marie finds herself alone, faced with the enigma of the disappearance of the man of her life… Amazon.ca Better known for the unsettling worlds of his early films, Sitcom and Water Drops on Burning Rocks, François Ozon surprises with Under the Sand, a more intimate production where he gives Charlotte Rampling the opportunity to once again prove her acting talents. Marie (Rampling) and Jean (Bruno Cremer), in their fifties, seem to fit the archetype of a quiet, bourgeois couple. One day, however, Jean disappears while swimming in the Landes. Initially brushing off his absence lightly, Marie eventually refuses all hypotheses, from suicide to drowning. She insists that he is still alive and even goes so far as to hallucinate their vanished intimacy. Wrapped in the music of Portishead, the atmosphere becomes all the more introspective. Sophisticated and bold in his choices of angles, lighting, and framing, François Ozon directs a film that demonstrates great maturity – much like a child who is too well-bred to do a sloppy job, yet cannot help but point his camera toward where it hurts. It is with poetry and refinement, but without detour, that he confronts us with a woman's refusal to mourn. Under the Sand is a captivating, sensual, and intelligent work that mesmerizes through its use of ellipses and contemplative languor. --Helen Faradji
