Without the beard, he became more of a singer than a singer-songwriter, took an interest in rock and pop, and learned to better balance art and political commitment. *Sur le chemin des incendies* represents the peak of this important transition. Poetry and music coexist beautifully to form a balanced album, polished without being stiff, thoughtful without being heavy. Piché opens with the ecological lament "J'appelle," then turns by turns contemplative ("Étrange"), romantic ("Sur ma peau," "Car je t'aime"), or nostalgic ("L'École des trois boutons"). Along the way, he delivers some of his most beautiful songs, in particular "Le Temps d'aimer," a remarkable anthem to childhood, the touching "Je lègue à la mer," and "Un château de sable," where he skillfully confides his fears regarding the erosion of the French language: "And the ink of the words drowns on my page/When I try to write in their wise tongue/On the shore there remains only a shipwreck/And a key eroded by the tide."
