As a child, Virgil tries his hand at the cello, but he abandons it to pursue a career in crime, despite his small size, his shyness, and his glasses constantly broken by tough guys. He robs a bank but is miserably arrested and sent to prison. He manages to escape and lives off theft of handbags before meeting Louise, a laundress, with whom he will have a child. But still penniless, he tries again to make a robbery, does not succeed and is sent back to prison. Once again, he escapes, tied by chains to other convicts. He will definitely be arrested while trying to rob an old childhood friend who turns out to be an FBI agent.
