In the case of The Matrix, one could almost speak of a founding work since this film, directed by the Wachowski brothers in 1999, was at the origin not only of sequels and pastiches, but also of nine short films conceived by masters of animation, mainly Japanese, brought together in The Animatrix. Even if these short films reveal extremely different styles, they all have an aesthetic closer to manga, these Japanese comics, than to Disney, undoubtedly better suited to evoking the post-apocalyptic universe of The Matrix. Above all, we will appreciate the originality of these artists, who are not content to “stick” to the world of the Matrix, but offer very creative variations, clarifications and deepenings of it. From the origins of the war between humans and machines (The Second Renaissance, parts 1 and 2) to the possibility of knowing the truth by surpassing oneself in sport (World Record), through a private detective transposed directly from the years 50 to find Trinity (A detective story), all manage to reinvent without copying. The Last Flight of Osiris goes so far as to offer itself as the missing link between The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded, in a particularly dazzling 3D animation (by the creators of Final Fantasy). The Animatrix will be a particularly vivid source for fans to quench their thirst for knowledge; for others, an excellent, original and inventive way to discover a universe. --Helen Faradji
