Amazon.ca Still basking in the public and critical success of American Beauty, director Sam Mendes treats himself to the luxury of bringing together Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Jude Law in his second feature film, Road to Perdition, a highly successful genre film, even if it seems to have been "formatted" to win awards. In the 1930s, near Chicago, Michael Sullivan is the enforcer for an Irish mob boss. When 12-year-old Michael Jr. discovers the activities of the father he idolizes, the boss's son seeks to ensure his silence by murdering the Sullivan family. The murder of the mother and younger son leaves the father and Michael Jr. alone to face their fate. Betrayal, honor, loyalty, responsibility: all the great human emotions seem to have converged along this Road to Perdition. While it offers a genuine reflection on fatherhood and filiation, the film is above all a conscientious reconstruction of the era and the mythical spirit of gangster films. Mendes indeed combines sets, costumes, music, and lighting, inviting us on a detailed tour of the genre. His calm and serene direction, imbued with great classicism, where certain shots possess a true poetry, conveys the profound humanity of the characters without ever veering into sentimentality. Road to Perdition, however, suffers from a rare ailment: that of being sometimes a little too perfect. --Helen Faradji
