After an opening half-hour of exposition—a united family whose happiness is symbolized by the scene where everyone joins in the chorus of the song the father sings in the car—Moretti observes, with great gentleness, the slow disintegration of this cohesion after the death of Andréa. Entirely turned inward toward his own irrepressible feeling of guilt, the father gradually sinks into himself, neglecting his wife, his daughter, and his patients. As for the other members of the family, the mother (Laura Morante, extraordinary) survives as best she can, clinging to the hope of one day meeting the girl who was Andréa's fleeting girlfriend, while Irène chooses to withdraw into herself. Performed with restraint and filmed with great delicacy, the long, arduous journey of this family earned Nanni Moretti a well-deserved Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2001. The DVD—technically impeccable—offers interesting bonus features: the Cannes press conference, a somewhat conventional interview with Moretti for Italian television, and a short film; but none of it can compare to this film, which leaves you breathless, deeply moved, and filled with hope all at the same time. --Georges Dabeliou
