Details: Amazon.ca Modest, sensitive, moving… There are no qualifiers to express the different facets of Nanni Moretti's film. From an eminently painful subject – the loss of a child – the director of Diary and Aprile has produced a moving work that never sinks into pathos. After a first half-hour of exposure – a united family, whose happiness is symbolized by this scene where everyone sings together the refrain sung in the car by the father – Moretti gently observes the slow disintegration of this cohesion after Andrea's death. Entirely turned towards himself and his irrepressible feeling of guilt, the father gradually sinks, abandoning his wife, his daughter and his patients. As for the other members of the family, the mother (Laura Morante, extraordinary) survives as best she can, clinging to the hope of one day meeting the one who was Andrea's short-lived girlfriend, and Irène chooses to withdraw into herself. Interpreted with restraint, filmed with great delicacy, this family's long way of the cross earned Nani Moretti a very justified Palme d'or at Cannes in 2001. The DVD – technically impeccable – offers interesting bonuses: the Cannes press conference, a somewhat conventional interview with Moretti for Italian television, a short film; but without common measure with this film which leaves panting, upset and filled with hope at the same time. --Georges Dabeliou
