They Call Me Rico / Sweet Exile - CD
The wanted posters plastered around town describe him as a One Man Band. A man alone against the world. A loner who faces the audience with six strings in hand, the slide nervous, inhaling the harmonica between two verses, the heel of his boot worn down from pounding the floor to keep the tempo.
Nuits de Fourvière with Jack White, Jazz à Vienne, Cahors Blues Festival, Blues sur Seine, Cognac Blues Passions, Festival d’été de Québec, Festival International de Jazz de Montréal: the four letters of his name have cracked like a whip on many stages. Those stages where he is known as Rico.
After three albums, the man has come down from his northern Rockies where tree branches bend under the snow to reach the Mexican border and its infinite horizon. A new musical adventure in CinemaScope, carried by the rising temperatures and arid plains of spaghetti westerns. The kind where there are neither good guys nor bad guys. Neither black nor white. Only gray areas. There, with a gravelly, dark, or possessed voice, Rico blends the melodies of folk, the power of blues, and the vivacity of rock.
Used to walking alone, he knows, however, that some hits are better when done together... For Sweet Exile, his new album, Rico has recruited two pistoleros to his cause: Jean Joly (bass) and Josselin Soutrenon (drums). Together, they are Rico & The Escape. With reins lashing the flanks of their mounts, the four men display a tenfold, broadened ambition, made of more varied compositions and more complex orchestrations.
An ambition that, between now and the official release of Sweet Exile on November 9, 2018, they will have brought live many times with a live team augmented by two new members: Russell Stagement on rhythm guitar and backing vocals and Charlie Glad on keyboards and violin. In a configuration capable of deploying enough energy to power a locomotive. The rattlesnake’s tail hissing between their boots...
