Details: Amazon.ca Richard Pelland, protégé of singer Boom Desjardins, benefited from ideal conditions to record Tout est normal, a debut pop album with folk undertones. Housed by the label Boombox/DKDD, the singer-songwriter from Joliette had a budget that provided him with polished production and, above all, a team of accomplished musicians, notably drummer Pierre Hébert (Octobre), accordionist Michel Hinton (Beau Dommage), and a string section including violist Ligia Paquin. While his raspy voice, not always steady, is similar to that of the frontman of La Chicane, Pelland nevertheless has his own musical identity. It is true that with his penchant for country and rock colors, the artist cannot claim to renew Quebec chanson – yet he handles the pen quite well and knows how to find melodies that stick to his aesthetic choices. Also, despite a few less convincing tracks like "Le Roi du guess," with its rather heavy structure, or "Ut," which is more of a stylistic exercise, Pelland manages to draw us into his world where torments and questionings are served with a good dose of "toé," "ben," and "moé." Tout est normal may not reinvent the wheel, but it knows how to make it turn. --Nicolas Houle
