Simply Country
Author: Beland, Pier
Details: Amazon.ca Wearing a Stetson on the cover, singer Pier Béland bluntly announces the colors of her album Simply Country, whose title couldn't be more eloquent. The lady proudly sings the music that fascinates more than one in Quebec and signs most of the titles on the disc. Among the musicians, Guy Gagner's violin stands out and gives life to the whole. Wounded love, betrayal and rupture dominate the themes addressed, with two exceptions: "The Last Rendez-Vous", on Alzheimer's disease, and the title song, portrait of a survivor who rediscovers the joy of loving. The sweetish voice and the occasional instrumentation draw directly on the country tradition, without worrying about renewing it, and the whole seems marked out to please those who are already won over to the genre. As for the others, they may find that this album lacks a bit of panache and brilliance… --Diane Jean
