Details: Amazon.ca The jazzman Michel Cusson, formerly of the Uzeb formation, once again demonstrates the agility with which he manages to marry various universes. After the jazzy soundtrack of the TV series Omertà, the fairground music of Bunker, Le Cirque and the more rock compositions of Last Chapter and Tag, he ventures into a lyrical register to depict the atmosphere of the film A Man and His Sin, by Charles Binamé, adapted from the novel by Claude-Henri Grignon. Avoiding the pitfall of stereotypical folk music, Cusson opts for a classicism where his six strings and percussion accentuate the most dramatic moments ("Le Duel"), where the viola d'amore and a string quartet highlight the passion that inhabits the characters ("Péché mortal") and where, finally, the accordion underlines the rural and popular character of this love story ("Coeur d'or"). However, this very successful album ends with a less successful song by Luc Plamondon. Performed by Isabelle Boulay, "Since the first day" seduces with its melody, which takes up the recurring theme of the soundtrack, but disappoints with its clumsy text. If we disregard this track, Cusson's creations provide a most pleasant listening experience, reviving with accuracy and simplicity the epic of the mythical Donalda, Alexis and Séraphin. --Nicolas Houle
