Details: Product Description Serbian musician and composer Goran Bregovic created these musical masterpieces from the critically acclaimed 1995 film UNDERGROUND, his third collaboration with director Emir Kusturca. The film was awarded the coveted Palme d'Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. Many of the pieces were inspired by traditional melodies of Gypsy music. Amazon.ca Two years after winning a Palme d'Or in 1985 for When Father Was Away on Business, Emir Kusturica did it again with Underground. As usual, the Yugoslavian director called upon his longtime friend, Goran Bregovic. Kusturica has a real understanding of his country's musical traditions. The man himself, a former punk, played bass between 1986 and 1988 with Zabranjeno Pusenje, in other words No Smoking (which rose from its ashes at the dawn of the new millennium). Thus, the music of Underground navigates between jazz, folk, Gypsy music, country, pop, and Turkish marches. The score hooks confetti and streamers onto fairground choruses. It breaks down a Slavic poetry spread across the debauchery of a baroque universe, crossed by the nostalgic voice of Cesaria Evora. Her saudade, titled "Ausencia," illuminates this hodgepodge of rhythms influenced by Gypsy culture. --Sabrina Silamo
