Unpretentious disc which favors Latin music ("Le Touriste", "Volando"), Vacaciones seems, at first glance, one could not be further from the universe of singing cowboys. The singer's first musical loves nevertheless quickly infiltrated these warm rhythms, sometimes in a fully assumed way ("Salut ma siren"), sometimes behind a few Latin accents ("It's a shame", "Even if"). Gildor Roy does not impose himself so much by the spectrum of his voice, which is rather limited, as by the obvious pleasure he takes in singing this collection of sympathetic pieces. Visibly at ease with this music tamed over stays in the Dominican Republic, the singer-actor does not take himself seriously and likes to spice up his compositions with humor, alternating love songs and anecdotal stories. Vacaciones will probably not go down in history for the high quality of its content, but the realization as well as the orchestration, with its rich brass section, remain no less successful. Apart from a superfluous cover of "Guantanamera", boredom never shows up, especially since Gildor Roy shines throughout the disc with his warm presence. --Nicolas Houle
