Details: Amazon.ca It seemed throughout his long career that vibraphonist Milt Jackson was incapable of making a bad record. On this occasion in 1961 he met the Oscar Peterson Trio at the top of its form. The result is obvious--a monumentally successful album. The contrast between the sparse and beautifully timed sounds of the vibraphone and Peterson's technically eloquent piano playing inspires the two men to ever greater heights and the culmination is in the long "Reunion Blues", a rolling fast number that brings out some earthy improvising. This is in contrast to the beautiful ballad performances, with both men investigating "Green Dolphin Street" in particular with great taste. Nat Adderley's jazz hit "Work Song" and "John Brown's Body" both exploit the funky side of jazz and the mix of tunes makes for a well-balanced and meaty session. This was the first Peterson trio to dispense with the guitar, and its absence highlights the delicate and instinctive playing of bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen who leave one in no doubt that this was the best trio Peterson ever had. --Steve Voce
