Vidocq (French version)
Author: Gerard Depardieu
Format: NTSC
Details: Amazon.ca "Vidocq is dead!" Never has the announcement of the disappearance of a thief so upset all of Paris. And for good reason ! Passed from the clan of the hunted to that of the hunters, this ex-convict, who became prefect of police under the Empire and the Restoration, was on the trail of a terrible masked killer and his investigation seemed to reach the goal. Based on an original and powerful screenplay by Jean-Christophe Grangé (Les Rivières pourpres), whose macabre touches are easily recognized here and there, the legendary François Vidocq returns to service in the guise of our good old Gérard Depardieu. But the main interest of this gothic thriller lies in the innovative process used since it is the very first film in the world made in digital cinema. Although it certainly takes a considerable time to adapt to this new technique, the result is no less impressive: the sets and the external environment, entirely reconstructed by computer, offer meticulous detail capable of reconstructing the cold, gloomy and unhealthy universe of the Paris of 1830, and to reinforce the latent visceral fear and the frenetic pace imposed by Grangé and Pitof. Vidocq could only be accompanied by a prestigious edition of two DVDs, laden with supplements as instructive as they are fun, capable of satisfying the curiosity of lovers of new processes. --Frederic Thorens
