Details: Product Description Yann Perreau Amazon.ca Western Romance, Yann Perreau's debut album, undeniably establishes a new voice in Francophone music. The former leader of the punk band Doc et les Chirurgiens truly resembles no one else and is not afraid of diversity. Urban, a bit cynical, undeniably rebellious, and darker than it is bright, this Western Romance reveals a highly inventive singer-songwriter. Across 12 evocative songs that sometimes groove and sometimes stretch out in a haunting way ("Soul Circus", "J'ai le goût de l'amour"), Perreau unfolds a unique and sophisticated universe, nourished by bossa-nova ("Fille d'automne"), techno ("Génération kamikaze"), and even a waltz ("Cloudy Mélancolie"), which at times recalls that of Jay Jay Johanson or Arno. The young man, who lacks neither audacity nor ideas, even allows himself the luxury of an electronic tribute to Richard Desjardins ("On m'a oublié"). The subtle and polished arrangements by Gilles Brisebois, the guitar work of David Brunet, and Perreau's velvety voice provide unity to this surprisingly mature debut album. "To go to the end, to surpass oneself, or to grow numb and rot," he sings in "La Peur". The artist has clearly decided to go to the end... of himself. --Pascale Millot
