Details: . Director of several short films, young Quebec filmmaker Daniel Roby delivers a surprising first feature, adapted from a novel by fantasy author Joël Champetier. La peau blanche (White Skin) was awarded the prize for Best Canadian First Feature at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival.
Thierry, a young man from the Gaspé region who has come to study in Montreal, literally falls for a young redhead with very pale skin, a characteristic that usually doesn't appeal to him. But Claire’s sexual desires, her strange illness, and her no less strange family intrigue Henri, Thierry's best friend and roommate. Little by little, they will discover other increasingly disturbing secrets.
Halfway between fantasy and horror and made on a limited budget, La peau blanche delves into the secrets of genetics to become a truly successful Quebec genre debut. Taking advantage of the urban setting of Montreal, and despite direction that sometimes lacks confidence—notably in its overuse of close-ups—Daniel Roby succeeds in creating a thick and unsettling mystery through sensual and disturbing atmospheres. Relying on beautiful symbolism and original, polished dialogue, the film is an unhealthy love story whose elements might even recall the early works of a Quebec Cronenberg. – Helen Faradji.
