Amazon.ca In the vein of Latin American productions aimed at a wide audience and financially supported by the United States, Y tu mamá también, by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, is a particularly hard-hitting road movie, whose apparent lightness serves only to mask a much more acerbic substance. When Julio and Tenoch, two aimless teenagers from different social backgrounds, meet Luisa, a stunning young Spanish woman, they decide to show her Mexico by taking her to an imaginary beach they call the Mouth of Heaven. Guided essentially by their desires, this romantic trio will soon see the murky underside of their façade of freedom revealed to the light of day. Thanks to energetic direction and fresh, captivating actors (Maribel Verdú, Diego Luna, and Gael García Bernal, who had already supported the excellent Amores Perros), this sharp and ambiguous, sometimes ferocious, Jules and Jim is an excessive joyride where coming of age is viewed as a true rite of passage, one that love and friendship cannot truly withstand. This bitter assessment is nonetheless tempered by vivid and powerful scenes in which all the insouciance and fire of youth burst forth. Despite a voice-over that is sometimes poorly integrated and an ending that is somewhat predictable, Y tu mamá también remains an insolent and sensual cinematic surprise. --Helen Faradji
