Details: Amazon.ca After the resounding success of his New York album Love On The Beat, Gainsbourg returned to the Big Apple in 1987, but unfortunately for the last time. In this final studio album, Serge affirms his absolute mastery of talk-over, this so singular way he had of speaking more than singing, keeping the rhythm tight and most often letting the choirs provide the melodic line. The guitars slam on absolutely impeccable arrangements highlighted by the inspired interventions of saxophonist Stan Harrison. The very highlight of the album remains unquestionably "Aux enfants de la chance", a climatic and convincing anti-drug tirade, touching too, between the lips of a man who nevertheless very widely abused other authorized substitutes, them, by the state. In the cover section, that of "Mon legionnaire", once popularized by Edith Piaf, closes this album with absolute class. Only Gainsbourg could imagine, without laughing, being able to interpret this title written for a woman. His singular reading of this already admirable song touches here on the monument. He makes a masterpiece of what would have been nothing but clowning in the mouth of another, miraculously sweeping away all notion of vulgarity. Luc Besson will draw a black and white clip from it with a dignified and elegant aesthetic, which transcends everything. Hats off to this last bow from a true lord. --Sylvie Devilette Product Description (Germany)
