Zekuhl / Tòòdana - CD

Atna Njock , alias Zekuhl , presents his 4th album, a world jazz universe combining the traditional Bantu sounds of Cameroon with the contemporary colors of the world. Multi-instrumentalist, singer, excellent guitarist and player Master of the Nkuu, Zekuhl delivers us a spiritual invitation to raise our consciences to release the full potential of humanity.

Entitled Tòòdana , which means "Wake up", this opus presents twelve original compositions sung in French and in Bàsàa, his mother tongue, which speak of the awakening of our consciences, of surpassing oneself, of the imperfect and marvelous human. and the challenge of living together. Zekuhl transports us beyond borders with a unique and fluid groove, composed of rich rhythmic and melodic arrangements, while preserving a very accessible and danceable cadence.

With his traveling companion, the Nkuu, this ancestral drum which reproduces spoken languages, Zekuhl transposes the tradition of the language of tones into a modern acoustic and electric orchestration, where the musical movement of each song, played by phrases and rhythmic codes du Nkuu, reflects the sung message of the piece.

Fervent defender of African musical richness, he masters as much on guitar as on percussion, the play of different Cameroonian rhythms including Assiko, Bolbo, Makossa, Bikutsi, Mangambeu or even the Mpeya of the Baka pygmies, present in this album. Connoisseurs of the great voices of Cameroon will recognize the participation of Ben Decca and his legendary voice in the piece Wàa yī ɓee .

Present on the Quebec scene since the 90s, Zekuhl is one of the precursors of musical diversity in Quebec. Grandson of a traditional chief, Atna grew up in Cameroon where he was initiated from an early age to the musical art of several African tribes, including those of his Bàsàa tribe and the Baka pygmies near his village. Thereafter, it was enriched with contemporary musical varieties of the world to present an innovative world-jazz style. Atna Njock writes and composes the playing of each instrument.
