You’d think that coincidence doesn't exist. Zoo Baby is what had to happen to its alter ego, singer-songwriter Xavier Dufour-Thériault. While he continues to make the girls dance with Gazoline and having played bass for Caféïne, he had to restore to what we vaguely call authenticity these days, the vigor of his philosophical aspirations; to express with sincerity and commitment who he is at his core.
Between the walls of his bedroom, without ever claiming to be part of that American bedroom pop movement born in the 2010s, and even though he belongs to a generation that has never known a world without the internet, it is with this ethos of the new DIY wave that Xavier initially conceived the pop of Zoo Baby.
Music—because pop isn't an aesthetic in itself, he argues—that is highly attractive, sensual, and personal, true, free, and original, with a complex and uninhibited simplicity. 10 tracks about love, dreams, and their opposites that he brought to the hands of Julien Mineau (Malajube).
In the home studio in Saint-Ursule of the brilliant producer and arranger, the two, hard workers obsessed with melodies that hook you without warning, erected castles of analog and synthetic instrumentation on these 10 tracks. Modern architectures made of layers of atmospheric keyboards, post-disco grooves, fuzzy and mellow strings, faked brass, and layers of reverberated harmonic vocals. Between the opening "Une métaphore pour l’amour" and "Paralysie du sommeil," which fades into a tortuous feedback, a rare musical world in these Francophone northern lands can be heard emerging. Strong. Absorbing.
