Details: Amazon.ca When Sam Roberts's 2003 debut disc We Were Born in a Flame topped many critics' polls, it was an incredible feat for the new Canuck on the block. An even more impressive accomplishment was his subsequent triple win for Album, Rock Album, and Artist of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards--truly rare for a first-timer. Having successfully conquered Canadian rock radio with past hits "Don't Walk Away Eileen" and "Where Have All The Good People Gone?" it would be easy to assume that Roberts would continue to follow the path of his previous disc, but it can honestly be said that Chemical City is an evolution both in style and substance. Roberts admits to gleaning inspiration for this disc from records of the late '60s and early '70s--specifically The Band's Music From Big Pink and The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street--and it shows. The disc's kickoff track and single "The Gate" brings the psychedelic sound to the forefront immediately; equally noteworthy is a jam-heavy eight-minute track called "Mind Flood," as well as the similarly explosive "The Bootleg Saint." One of Chemical City's high points is the rallying cry of "The Resistance," which finds Roberts passionately singing "Living, loving, swinging, ducking/We might fail, but we have to try/I poked my finger in the public eye." Deadheads and Phish phans, take note: Roberts may well be the next reason to jump in a VW van and hit the tour trail this summer. --Denise Sheppard Product Description Recorded over the past year in Newyrbar, Australia and Montreal, Chemical City follows up their hugely successful debut We Were Born In A Flame which was adored by the US media and earned rave reviews in Entertainment Weekly, People, New York Times, USA Today, Blender, Spin, Elle and Vanity Fair, as well as performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, just to name a few. Behind Sam is a 3-year rocket ride that boosted a Montreal indy rocker to a new level, landing 3 number one Canadian singles, playing Live 8, opening the 2003 SARS benefit before a crowd of half a million, and winning 3 Juno Awards (Canada's Grammy Award). Chemical City, which was produced by Sam Roberts, Joe Donovan and Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan) is a continuation of the retro-sometimes-psychedelic rock of his debut. This sophomore album thrusts Roberts and his bandmates lead guitarist Dave Nugent, guitarist/keyboardist Eric Fares, bassist James Hall and drummer Josh Trager back into the spotlight.
