Details: Amazon.ca Field Manual is a warm and inviting pop album, the perfect accompaniment to a long, pensive drive in a rental car. Chris Walla is the other guy out front in Death Cab for Cutie, and while Death Cab's Monchichi-faced lead singer, Ben Gibbard, was reaping the rewards of his vocal and songwriting work on the Postal Service's surprise hit album, Give Up, Walla was hunkered over mixing boards across the country. His production work for the Long Winters, Nada Surf, the Thermals, Tegan and Sara, Hot Hot Heat, the Decemberists, and his own band has always sat smack dab between the relaxed, poppy vibe of Chris Stamey and the warm yet unadorned approach of Joe Boyd. As lead guitarist, producer, and sometime singer and songwriter for DCFC, Walla has always been the band's unassuming secret weapon. He's not got the octave-spanning range of Mariah Carey and Captain Beefheart. He barely boasts a full octave, but his pleasant, breathy vocals are well served by the textured, literate, political pop songs on Field Manual. This earnest and delightful record was well worth the wait. --Mike McGonigal Product Description The debut solo album from Death Cab For Cutie founding member, Chris Walla. He has been an in-demand producer of other independent-minded artists (Tegan & Sara, Decemberists). An extraordinary album of atmospheric and politically minded alternative pop that displays his singular songwriting vision while simultaneously showing the degree to which his aesthetic has informed Death Cab's sound over the years. The last two Death Cab albums have scanned almost 1.5 million combined in the US. Barsuk Records/WEA. 2008.
