Details: Amazon.ca Getz For Lovers is a medium-priced CD spanning two decades of the tenor saxophonist's work for the Verve label. There are two selections apiece from the immaculate 1957 meeting with the Oscar Peterson Trio, the much-undervalued 1963 Reflections that has yet to be reissued on CD and the 1967 album dedicated to the work of Burt Bacharach; the superlative "O Grande Amor" and "Little Girl Blue" are taken, respectively, from Sweet Rain and Nobody But Me--two of Getz's greatest albums for Verve or indeed anyone else. In addition "Body and Soul", "But Beautiful" and "Here's That Rainy Day" are ballad readings as stirring as they are flawless, and for good measure there are three supple and melodious bossa novas. Seasoned Getz enthusiasts may have more than a few of these tracks already, but such is the organic unity of this CD that it can be recommended to them almost as enthusiastically as to the newcomer or those whose collection is unaccountably Getzless. In sum, this is an intelligent, catholic and illuminating compilation that surely deserved a more imaginative, less salacious title. --Richard Palmer
