Details: If there's an artist who best symbolized Toronto's late-'90s ascent from obscure hip-hop backwater to "the next New York," it was Choclair. As the first "urban" artist signed to a major label, the smooth-rhyming MC ended up supporting the weight of the entire Canadian hip-hop scene on his shoulders with the release of 1999's Ice Cold. It's easy to see why the slickly produced disc established Choclair as the T-Dot's most visible player in both Canada and America. Driven by radio-friendly beats and guest appearances by members of Gang Starr, the Roots, and the Roc-A-Fella family, tracks like "Let's Ride," "Bare Witness," and "Young Gunz" are virtually indistinguishable from the fantasy-living thug hip-hop coming out of New York and Atlanta. In a quest for success, Choclair ditched the intelligent rhymes that made him for cheap, puerile, and often offensive softcore porn scenarios that sound a bit rich coming from a former public school teacher from the 'burbs. --Matt Galloway
