Detractors might find their arty whims--from an album saluting the Group of Seven (Music Inspired by the Group of Seven) to a disc soundtracking a children's story (1999's The Story of Harmelodia)--off-putting, but no other Canadian band has so successfully blended so many disparate influences, from country to punk to folk to pop. Introducing Happiness, the group's fourth proper album, is a sprawling, complex record offering both instant pleasures--the title track, the much too beautiful "Claire," "Me and Stupid"--and layered tunes requiring time and patience. Of the latter there is almost no end on this 22-song monster, from opener "Fan Letter to Michael Jackson" to a strikingly different cover of Jane Siberry's "One More Colour," and from "Cephallus Worm/Uncle Henry" (perhaps the weirdest track these weirdos have ever recorded) to the closing fever dream "Onilley's Strange Dream." An album as rewarding as a good novel, Introducing Happiness is further proof that the Rheostatics are a national treasure whose influence will be felt for as long as young Canadians play guitars. --Shawn Conner
