Details: Amazon.ca Signing to Blue Note doesn't mean that Medeski, Martin and Wood have had to neglect their back catalogue. The content of this compilation are personally chosen by the trio, trawling through their three albums made for the US Gramavision label. The classic 60s Hammond organ groove is ruptured by a 90s rock sensibility, subtly twisted with avant garde attitude. Most of these cuts are fiercely funky, John Medeski's vintage keyboards sounding like they're reaching the end of their natural lives, chunky, broken-up and distorted as they fizz out of his wounded Leslie speakers. Three tracks gain fresh mixes, including the perfectly brutal opener "Chubb Sub". "Bubblehouse" gradually accelerates, hectoring hard before leading into the lounging respite of the set's title cut. "Hermeto's Daydream" is a lone example of MMW's pre-Gramavision days, from 1991, with Medeski trinkling acoustic piano. Three numbers lifted from "It's A Jungle In Here" feature guitarist Marc Ribot--and a horn section (Steven Bernstein, Josh Roseman, etc.), sounding particularly crisp on the Monk-Marley mix of "Bemsha Swing-Lively Up Yourself". The previously unreleased live track "Night Marchers" is so raunchy that it acts as a very tempting carrot for the MMW completist. --Martin Longley Product Description Medeski, Martin & Wood
