Author: Virginia Rodrigues
Release Date: 14-01-2008
Details: Amazon.ca This ex-manicurist and domestic from the slums of Salvador first came to international prominence with her 1998 debut, Sol Negro, an album of stark, startling beauty. The power of Rodrigues' vibrant alto voice has been compared to divas like Jessie Norman and Cesaria Evora. Collaborating once again with famed artistic director Caetano Veloso, she continues to mine her rich vein of "chamber samba", mixing the classical purity of church singing with understated African and Brazilian rhythms. This offering is less spare than the first, with a slight hint of crossover on more commercial track like "Afrekete", with its nostalgic easy listening feel and girlish chorus, or "Jeito Faceiro", complete with male crooner and sugary violin. The rest of the album, though, has a clear, simple resonance. A tribute to the Carnival music of Rodrigues' native state of Bahia, in northern Brazil, it weaves together myths and love songs, featuring Rodrigues' enigmatic vocal high in the mix. --Lucy O'Brien
