Poltz's often wry and pining tunes evoke the work of one of his idols, Rickie Lee Jones.... Sense of humor is not the strong point of many pop singers, and it's refreshing to find one performer who can laugh at himself a little. -- People Amazon.ca Poltz spent more than a decade fronting goofball San Diego rockers The Rugburns before becoming an "overnight sensation" as the cowriter of Jewel's smash single "You Were Meant for Me." On One Left Shoe, he steps out in a similar singer-songwriterly direction, fashioning a collection of confessional folk pop tunes that are about evenly split between movingly memorable and blandly boring. Jewel sings along on the catchiest tune of the bunch, "Silver Lining" (which she cowrote with Poltz); other highlights include "The Great Mystery" and "Kicking Distance." At 57 minutes, the album would be stronger with three or four of the weaker tunes left off; but as a solo debut, One Left Shoe is a largely auspicious affair. --Peter Blackstock
