Details: Amazon.ca Hard to believe, but Cecilia Bartoli was only 22 when she made this debut recording--and it is simply astonishing to hear such an assured technique, such a rich and rounded voice, and even more than that, such ease and confidence in someone so young. Though she had already triumphed in the roles of Cherubino ( Le Nozze di Figaro) and Dorabella ( Così fan tutte), she makes it clear in this recording that the music of Rossini is her spiritual home. She has the vocal agility to leap around his fearsome scales and trills like a mountain goat, and yet has the emotional understanding to invest even the most simple phrase with an infinite variety of colours. The "Willow Song" ("Assisa a piè d'un salice") from Rossini's Otello is a case in point: its long lines would be enough to tax the breath control--let alone the musicianship--of many mezzos; Bartoli floats through the phrases with perfectly judged pathos. She is also admirably supported by some fine playing from the Volksopernorchester Wien. This is a great disc, from a great singer. -- Warwick Thompson
