Details: Evgeny Kissin has been getting a rough ride from the critics of late, standing accused of rampant ego at the expense of all sensitivity. That may be debatable, but what’s not in doubt is the sensitivity on view in this new Schumann recording. Opening with the Sonata No.1, Kissin’s playing has what is best described as an unironic sincerity: his clean and unfussy approach lets Schumann’s mercurial fancy soar into the empyrean. And in both this and Carnaval which follows it, he finds exactly the right interplay between light and shade, between humour, gravity and sadness. The "Preambule" may be over-pedalled to a point where it’s just a hurtling blur, but everything else is a delight. "Florestan" becomes a study in constantly-checked turbulence, seguing beautifully into a very coquettish "Coquette". "Chiarina" is nobly firm-toned, "Chopin" notably unsentimental, "Paganini" is suitably dazzling; the last four scenes wind gracefully to a magnificently star-spangle! d conclusion. All’s to one thing wrought.--Michael Church
