The members of the group are hereditary Carioca (Rio-born) sambistas who met and re-met at recording sessions until they decided to do things their own way. While their style harks back to such grassroots traditionalists as Martinho Da Vila, the production values are strictly up-to-date. A stellar convocation of guest artists is on hand to enhance the festivities, including singer-songwriter and Velas label honcho Ivan Lins, the torchy female vocalist Joyce, and journeyman sambista Zeca Pagodinho, who sits in on one of his own compositions. The album has a celebratory, unselfconscious carnival ambiance, as plinking guitars, woodwinds and brass, whining and sobbing cuicas (friction percussion played with an oil-soaked rag), brisk snare drums, and tambourines are propelled by the roaring report of surdo drums. --Christina Roden
