Details: Amazon.ca Si Se comprises New York songstress/underground scenestress Carol C and Brooklyn b-boy producer/DJ UF Low. Their debut album Si Se, co-produced by Michael Mangini (Digable Planets), aims to merge together downtempo beats with Latinesque grooves and song structures. Not the most original idea in the world, but the resultant sound is surprisingly fresh. The production, though made on an MPC 3000 by Low, is sparse, uncluttered and designed more for home listening than for the dancefloor. The moods on the album lie somewhere between the cold isolation of Bristol bands like Massive Attack and the warmer melodics of bands like Air and Zero 7. Carol C is the band's biggest bonus; switching between Spanish and English with ease, she adds plenty of mood to the music with her softly floating vocals and interesting lyrics. Song-wise there's a cover of the Oran Juice Jones track "The Rain", plenty of gently swaying downtempo tracks and the odd excursion into more upbeat, drum & bass territory. Although this album veers dangerously close to post-drum & bass anonymity at times, it has enough bright moments to appeal to anyone who likes chilled music general--and especially those who like a Latin twist. -- Paul Sullivan
