Details: Amazon.ca Lyle Mays has always been the quieter half of the Metheny-Mays partnership thst drives the Pat Metheny Group, and his reflective tendencies, typified by his admiration for the pianist Bill Evans, have probably been responsible for much of the lyricism in the group. Here, he's able to give stronger voice to his poetic inclinations, stretching out for 49 minutes with only the piano for company. The result is frequently reminiscent of similar explorations by Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea, although Mays' expansion of the piano adds a different dimension. Solo Improvisations For Expanded Piano doesn't imply, as often in free jazz, the attachment of forks, keys and other rattling junk to the piano's strings but refers to the addition of orchestrations after the event to the piano improvisations. These were derived in part from synthesisers, in part from digital manipulation of the original piano sounds, and add an eerie shadow to Mays' impressionistic ruminations. --Mark Gilbert
