Par un froid matin d’hiver canadien, Tomás laisse sa famille encore endormie pour prendre un vol vers l’Espagne. À Madrid, il retrouve son vieil ami Julián, atteint d’un cancer incurable. Cette visite surprise a de quoi réjouir Julián, acteur un peu à court d’argent qui vit avec son fidèle chien, Truman. Espérant convaincre Julián de poursuivre ses traitements de chimiothérapie palliative, Tomás accepte néanmoins sa décision d’y renoncer. Les retrouvailles peuvent donc aller de l’avant, et Julián conçoit un petit programme qui les mène d’un cabinet de vétérinaire à un café d’Amsterdam en passant par un complexe funéraire. Au fil de leurs pérégrinations, Tomás sera témoin des efforts de Julián pour mettre de l’ordre dans sa vie et assurer un avenir à Truman, ainsi qu’à son fils de 22 ans.

Leaving snowy Canada, where he now lives, Tomas travels to Madrid to visit Julian, a college friend who’s been diagnosed with cancer. Tomas has planned in secret with Paula's cousin Julian to convince the latter to undergo a chemotherapy treatment that will give him a few more months to live. The patient objects, saying, at what price? Resigned to the fact that he’s going to die, Julian agrees to leave Madrid for four days with Tomas as an opportunity to celebrate life. Their trip takes them to Amsterdam, where Julian’s son is studying. But what concerns Julian the most is what will happen to his old dog, Truman, so Tomas agrees to help find him a new home.
