Details: Amazon.ca Following the commercial success of Analyze This, which even inspired the television series The Sopranos, Warner studios fashioned a sequel for it. Bringing back Billy Crystal and Robert De Niro, who teamed up as producers for the occasion, Analyze That continues to explore the relationship between a mafia boss and his psychoanalyst. After surviving an attempted murder in prison, Paul Vitti appears to be descending into madness. He hums tunes from West Side Story only to then fall into a catatonic state. The authorities then decide, on the condition that the mafioso finds his way back to the straight and narrow, to entrust him to his therapist, who has just lost his father and is suffering from terrible panic attacks. Making a successful sequel is a difficult exercise, and Analyze That is no exception to the rule. Of course, the humor of the first film is still present: some gags even recall Woody Allen, and the comedic strength of De Niro is not to be underestimated. However, the whole fails to really take off. Perhaps because some lines are clichéd, or perhaps because the pacing quickly runs out of steam. Or perhaps it is simply the unpleasant impression that the producers were content to take the same ingredients and start all over again. --Helen Faradji
