Details: After the surprise success of his previous film, Memento, young British director Christopher Nolan continues to assert his talent in Insomnia, a brilliant and original psychological thriller pitting Al Pacino against Robin Williams.

Will Dormer, a legendary Los Angeles police officer, is sent with his partner to a small town in Alaska to solve a sordid murder case. Harassed by the omnipresence of the midnight sun and the quasi-hypnotic rhythm of life that results from it, he must face both a cunning killer and the trap set by his own conscience.

Thanks to a sharp sense of direction and impeccable sound design, Nolan creates a dangerously quiet universe, the stage for ambiguous and unsettling relationships. Taking advantage of the great talent of his performers – Al Pacino, excellent as a cop stifled by a situation he controls less and less, and Robin Williams, in a very convincing against-type role – the director succeeds in creating a thriller with precise suspense, sustained by a particularly subtle tension. A sophisticated script and overwhelming depths of field are also among the ingredients of this very good recipe. Perfectly mastered visually, Insomnia is one of those films that lead us to believe that genre cinema still has a promising future. --Helen Faradji
