She does it again by doing Sweet Home Alabama, directed by Andy Tennant, a more than respectable romantic film. Mélanie Carmichael has everything she could dream of. A noted, ravishing fashion designer, she is about to marry New York's hottest bachelor: the Mayor's son (played by a delectable Candice Bergen). But before fully living her fairy tale, she will have to return to her hometown of Alabama to divorce her first husband, Jake. It's true that, in this hopelessly sentimental Sweet Home Alabama, love ends up triumphing over cultural and social divides in somewhat simple and predictable ways, and that the soundtrack is annoying at times. On the other hand, the exaggeration of the discrepancy between the upscale and trendy world of New York and the rustic universe of Alabama gives rise to rather funny and dynamic situations. If the whole lacks a certain cynicism that would make it more crisp, it is however easy to let yourself be carried away by the freshness and personality of Reese Witherspoon. The young actress makes her character more than a scatterbrained shopgirl and greatly adds to the charm of this rather honorable comedy in the end. --Helen Faradji
